As is so often the case with modern all-ages comics, this reads as if it's talking down to children rather than making it accessible to them. The argument that it's an all-ages book just doesn't fly with me. The rest of the book is riddled with more plot holes and a simplicity to the dialogue that implies a certain level of laziness taken with the approach. I mean if you create a robot with flames on its head then it's pretty much guaranteed to turn evil, right? I understand the reasoning that maybe this would be more believable for kids, but they deserve a bit more credit than that. For instance, it's hard to believe that the original intention of the Robot Masters was for the betterment of mankind. Regardless of who this is written for, there are portions of this book that are just a bit too hard to swallow. The resolution fumbles with its simplicity, but it is still one of the highlights of the story. The internal conflict that Mega Man has towards violence is intriguing, and while it loses some punch when he begins to repeat himself over and over, it soon evolves and becomes an important character arc. I will say that for a book focused so heavily on the main character defeating six angry robots, the battles themselves are absurdly short and anti-climactic. There's also some interesting twists along the way, so even those familiar with the original subject matter will be in for a few surprises. The references to the game hit that nostalgia button but as one would expect, but the quirks of the video game don't often translate so well to the comic. The gang's all here as far as classic Mega Man characters and enemies go and it's actually pretty cool to see them come to life on the page. Sadly, though somewhat expected, this volume has done nothing to change my mind. It's not because I'm opposed to reading all-ages books, I just didn't feel the need for a comic retelling of the game. That being said, I wasn't particularly looking forward to this new series. Hell, I beat all the games up until the fourth one, then I just about had my fill for a good long while. I consider myself a fan of the original Mega Man games.
